Is there a maximum number of employment offers a student may hold open at any one time? Yes
Maximum number of offers that can be held open 3
Is there a specific date before which employers should not initiate formal one-on-one recruiting contact with first-year students? Yes
What is the date before which employers should not initiate contact with first-year students? October 19, 2022. 2023 date to be announced (expected to remain in mid-October).
Recruiting policy comments/explanation To allow students in the Class of 2025 to sufficiently explore opportunities for 2L summer, employers in the private sector should leave offers made to Duke Law students open until the later of August 18, 2023, or 14 days following the offer letter date. Additionally, employers should grant a 7-day extension for all offers upon written request from the student prior to the expiration of the offer. These Guidelines apply to offers to return for summer 2024, as well as to new offers for summer 2024.

It is our belief that students are in the best position to make optimal career decisions when employers follow these Guidelines. Employers practicing offer timing policies that do not follow the above Guidelines should provide offer timing information to students early in the application process, and should make Duke Law CPDC aware of their offer timing plans.

As in the past, three offers will remain the maximum that Duke Law students should hold open at any given point.

These guidelines are reviewed annually and are subject to change. Please reference our website for the most up-to-date policies: https://law.duke.edu/career/employer/policies/
